SEPTEMBER, 20259CSL, HYUNDAI AFFILIATE, TN GOVT INK MOUS TO BOOST SHIPBUILDINGTOP STORIESCochin Shipyard (CSL) has signed MoUs with Hyundai Heavy affiliate HD KSOE and the Tamil Nadu government to boost India shipbuilding and drive shipyard expansion.The MoUs were signed in front of Union Minister of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal, Union Minister of State Shantanu Thakur, Hyundai Senior Vice President Jung Changin, and CSL Chairman and Managing Director Madhu S. Nair.The deal with HD KSOE will utilize CSL's new 310-metre dry dock, which benefits from a Suezmax tankers, container ships and Capesize bulk carriers' capacity. This dock will allow for the construction of up to six large vessels each year. These partnerships aim to strengthen shipbuilding capacity, accelerate maritime industry growth, and position the shipping sector for global competitiveness.CSL is also planning to build an 80-acre Block Fabrication Facility (BFF), with a production capacity of 1,20,000 metric tonnes per year, at an estimated cost of 3,700 crore. As part of the construction of the BFF, the project will create 2,000 direct employment opportunities and create indirect employment opportunities through MSMEs, logistics and supporting industries.The CSL­HD KSOE cooperation will also be concerning with green-field shipyards, workforce skill development and new business opportunities aligned to the national objective under Maritime India Vision 2030 and Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047.At the same time, the leadership of CSL, in a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Guidance Tamil Nadu, has proposed a 15,000 crore brownfield shipyard project in Tamil Nadu in collaboration with a Korean company, which may or may not include a repair facility and is forecasted to produce almost 10,000 new jobs during the first phase.Madhu S. Nair, CMD of CSL stated, "This partnership seeks to combine CSL's legacy and infrastructure with Korean technological expertise to elevate India's role in the global shipbuilding industry".Collectively, these are a demonstration of India's intention to be a competitive shipbuilding state, advance its attempts at indigenisation and at maritime self-sufficiency.
