Venwind Refex Power Ltd, a new subsidiary of Refex Industries Ltd, has announced plans to invest ₹800 crore in advanced manufacturing facilities. The company plans to manufacture wind turbines with a nameplate capacity of 5.3 megawatts. Venwind is looking to create a robust domestic manufacturing base that supports India’s growing renewable energy requirements.

This follows a licensing deal with Vensys Energy AG, Germany, a global leader in wind turbine technology, and a designer of a permanent magnet, medium-speed generator system. With this collaboration, Venwind will leverage Vensys’ technology which is known and accepted for its efficiency and suitability to a variety of wind conditions.

The move into wind turbine manufacturing represents a significant diversification for Refex Industries, a listed company with operations in refrigeration gases, renewable electricity generation, ash and coal handling, power trading, pharmaceuticals, medical tech and sustainable mobility. This diversification is led by Madhusudan Khemka, a well-known industry veteran and unique leader of ReGen Powertech. Mr.Khemka was able to take advantage of his long standing relationship with some people at the German technology company Vensys to put the partnership together between Refex Group and Vensys.

Mr Khemk explained to reporters that the 5.3 MW turbines is hybrid, with a combination of geared and gearless systems for low wind speed locations. With a cut-in wind speed of as low as 2 metres a second, the turbine is expected in states like Odisha and Jharkhand, places with high land availability and moderate to low wind intensity.
