India, Brazil Discuss Defence Industry Collaboration

Recently, the meeting has been organized between Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi, Celso Amorim, Chief Advisor to the Brazilian President, and Minister of Defence José Mucio Monteiro. Defence industry cooperation and different capacity-building initiatives directed towards common security objectives and long-term interoperability improvement were some of the topics discussed

In a post on X, the Indian Navy Spokesperson stated, “Adm Dinesh K Tripathi, CNS, during the ongoing official visit to Brazil, met Celso Amorim, Chief Advisor to the President of Brazil and Jose Mucio Monteiro, Minister of Defence of Brazil. The discussions provided a comprehensive review of the expanding India-Brazil defence engagements, with focus on augmenting strategic cooperation, strengthening joint operational frameworks, enhancing training avenues, maritime security mechanisms and deepening coordination in Maritime Domain Awareness”.

The talks also included the global and regional factors affecting the situation, giving special attention to the South Atlantic and the Indo-Pacific, as well as the Global South's viewpoint, while both sides reiterated their support for a secure, stable, and rules-based world order.

Admiral Tripathi met the Commander of the Brazilian Navy, Admiral Marcos Sampaio Olsen, with the same purpose of furthering the ever-expanding maritime cooperation between India and Brazil.

The discussions revolved around operational contacts, training exchanges, hydrographic collaboration, information sharing, and improvement of maritime domain awareness. In addition, the two parties opened up the area of defence industry development, technology, and innovation, and sharing of best practices with a view to fostering cooperation.

The high-level gatherings reaffirmed the both navies' commitment to enhance their strategic alignment and to fortify their maritime collaboration which in turn would help to create an environment of global maritime stability and security.

The official visit of Admiral Tripathi to Brazil from 9th to 12th December is aimed at the advancement of the already strong maritime ties between the two countries’ navies that are part of the larger strategic partnership.

During the visit, the Chief of Naval Staff (CNS) will meet with the top management of the Brazilian armed forces, visit Brazilian naval installations, including an inspection of the shipyards, and hold discussions on maritime strategy areas of common interest like the promotion of naval interoperability and the development of South-South Partnerships, i.e., cooperation among developing countries.

The Ministry of Defence stated, “These interactions will provide an opportunity to review ongoing bilateral maritime cooperation, enhance operational-level linkages, and explore new avenues for collaboration between the two navies”.

The primary goal of this visit is to show the Indian Navy's resolve to continue to build up its relationships in the field of maritime security and capacity building with the Brazilian Navy.
