India Ghana Sign MoUs on Agriculture and Zoological Research
India and Ghana exchange two MoUs on agricultural research and zoological studies during External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar’s visit, strengthening academic, scientific and capacity-building cooperation.
India and Ghana have exchanged two Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) covering agricultural research, zoological studies, scientific cooperation and capacity building during External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar’s visit to Ghana. The agreements aim to advance South-South cooperation and strengthen the India-Ghana Comprehensive Partnership.
Jaishankar witnessed the exchange alongside Ghana’s Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa during the Ghana leg of his three-nation visit to Ghana, Cote d’Ivoire and Ethiopia from October 6 to 10. The agreements involve the Zoological Survey of India and the University of Ghana, as well as the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) and Ghana’s CSIR-Crops Research Institute.

Focus on Research and Capacity Building, under the first MoU, the Zoological Survey of India and the University of Ghana will cooperate in academics, scientific research and capacity building. The agreement is expected to facilitate greater institutional engagement and knowledge sharing in zoological and related scientific fields.
The second MoU establishes cooperation between ICAR, New Delhi, and Ghana’s CSIR-Crops Research Institute in agricultural research and education. The partnership adds a research and knowledge-sharing dimension to the broader agricultural relationship between the two countries.
The agreements were exchanged following discussions between Jaishankar and Ablakwa on expanding the India-Ghana Comprehensive Partnership. Their talks covered trade, investments, development cooperation, pharmaceuticals, capacity building, defence, technology and people-to-people ties. The ministers also discussed multilateral cooperation and India’s engagement with the African Union and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
Strengthening India-Ghana Partnership: Earlier, Jaishankar met Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama in Accra and conveyed greetings from President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The discussions highlighted the momentum in bilateral relations following Modi’s visit to Ghana last year and Ghana’s interest in expanding cooperation across multiple sectors.
The MoUs come as India and Ghana seek to broaden their cooperation in areas including agriculture, pharmaceuticals, technology, development assistance and capacity building. Ghana’s Foreign Ministry had also identified agricultural mechanisation, value addition, industrialisation, scholarships and IT partnerships as areas for deeper engagement during Jaishankar’s visit.
