  • Battery Aadhaar provides a unique ID to track batteries from manufacturing to recycling.
  • Integrates with AI and EV systems to enhance safety and prevent counterfeits.
  • Supports India’s electric vehicle initiatives and sustainability goals.

Recently, Science and Technology Minister Jitendra Singh launched the Battery Aadhaar Initiative to follow batteries through their entire life cycle manufacturing to recycling, creating transparency throughout the process to add efficiency.

Speaking at the Battery Summit, Singh stated that the technical contribution of the battery aadhaar will change the battery ecosystem in India by providing complete traceability for each battery pack through its unique digital identity.

The Battery Aadhaar will retain records of manufacturing, battery chemistry, safety approvals and certificates, performance metrics, and will verify battery usage in real time. Singh reiterated that all data will include real time monitoring and retrieval of bateria critical data like thermal events, charge discharge cycle events, and end of life, which can help predictive maintenance and effective recycling and contributes to the circular economy.

The Battery Aadhaar will also serve as a regulatory mechanism against counterfeit batteries and provide consumer safety and confidence. It is designed to complement Battery Management Systems (BMS), artificial intelligence diagnostics and linking and reporting to national electric vehicle (EV) databases - to form the beating heart of India's battery intelligence ecosystem.

Singh also touted ancillary policies for driving India’s clean energy ambition via PLI or Production Linked Incentive (PLI) schemes for more advanced cells in batteries, Pradhan Mantri e-Drive Scheme, and FAME schemes.

He referred to the MAHA-EV Mission under the Anusandhan National Research Foundation as a vital strategy as the EV ecosystem evolves. Singh also mentioned India's changing role as a climate leader, and acknowledged some milestones that were helpful to India's development of that reputation, including Net Zero 2070, Mission LiFE and the International Solar Agency. Aspects of these actions have enhanced India's reputation internationally and consolidated India's role as a leader in sustainable development and climate action.
