India Seeks U.S. Nod for Javelin Missile Co-Production
- India seeks to co-produce Javelin missiles with the U.S. under ‘Make in India’.
- Javelin is a lightweight, advanced anti-tank missile system.
- The move strengthens India’s defence readiness against regional threats.
India has officially sent a letter of request to the U.S. for co-production of Javelin anti-tank guided missiles (ATGMs), signalling a key move towards a considerably deeper defence relationship.
A senior defence source in New Delhi stressed that this request fits into the Government of India's 'Make in India' initiative, focussed on indigenous manufacturing of cutting edge defence systems.
The official said, "It will ensure operational readiness and reduce the dependability on foreign support. The talks are in advance stage".
Javelin produced collaboratively by two U.S. defence manufacturers, Raytheon and Lockheed Martin is recognized globally as one of the most advanced third-generation anti-tank guided missiles. An easy-to-use, portable and precise missile system, the Javelin affords a critical tactical advantage in the field especially in complex terrains.

With an increasing necessity to modernize and shore up India’s military capabilities, talks are also taking place with the US regarding the emergency procurement of the same missiles. This official noted that the Javelin's capabilities make it an excellent choice for India to enhance its operational readiness in case of any possible threats from Pakistan and China.
The Defence forces of India, in particular, are looking to procure shoulder-fired, lightweight missile systems, so troops could be more mobile in rough terrain without having to provide a great deal of logistic support.
Recently, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh spoke by phone to US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth to discuss ongoing and future defence cooperation initiatives and the strategic rationale underpinning this co-production proposal.
