
India Unveils Auto Mission Plan 2047 for Global Auto Leadership
- AMP 2047 targets India’s global leadership in automotive innovation.
- Seven sub-committees to set sector goals for 2030, 2037, and 2047.
- Aligns with ‘Viksit Bharat @2047’ vision; builds on AMP 2026.
The Government of India has initiated the process to prepare the Automotive Mission Plan 2047 (AMP 2047) a futuristic plan to make India a global automotive leader as part of the country’s wider 'Viksit Bharat @2047' vision. This work is being done by the Ministry of Heavy Industries with Union Minister H. D. Kumaraswamy.
The ministry stated that innovation, quality manufacturing, sustainability, and global competitiveness will be given priority in AMP 2047. Seven sub-committees comprising experts in government organizations, industry leaders, stakeholders, academia, and testing agencies have been formed to draft the strategy. These committees will development sector milestones in 2030, 2037, and 2047.
Additional Secretary Hanif Qureshi concluded that this mission is not just aspirational, it will have specific goals related to exporting capacity, industrial capability expansion and targeting the global market. "We should not focus on specific companies or technologies, but broaden the clarity our directions offer India in structural way to participate in the global trade of automotive goods." He emphasized, Government of India plan calls for meaningful engagement with stakeholders like Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), manufacturers of component parts (further sub-sector) and authorities that provide support to the policy heavy challenges in the sector, such as advanced technology, electric mobility and failure, charging station infrastructure, etc.

The first sub-committee meeting saw representation from several key ministries (Power, Road Transport & Highways, Commerce, Petroleum & Natural Gas, DPIIT, and Environment, Forest & Climate Change), industry associations (like SIAM, ACMA, CII, and FICCI), prominent academic institutions and think tanks.
This new roadmap leverages the baseline laid down from the success of the Automotive Mission Plan 2016 – 2026 (AMP 2026), which aimed to place India in the top 3 global auto markets for engineering, manufacturing, and (exports). It also aimed to increase the industry contribution of >12% to India’s GDP and 65 million jobs.
