iPhone Makers Cross 20% Local Sourcing from India: FM Sitharaman

Indian iPhone manufacturers reached the juncture of 20% local sourcing, an accomplishment for India’s aim to become a player in global electronics manufacturing. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman proclaimed the milestone attained on June 24 at the Trade Conclave 2025 at Exim Bank in New Delhi. She stated, "iPhone contract manufacturers have crossed 20% of local sourcing".

This advancement reveals India's emerging status in the global supply chain landscape of Apple given the shifting geopolitical trends changing global manufacturing paradigms. The localisation trend similarly signifies Apple’s incremental moves towards sourcing domestic components and materials in India, thus decreasing the level of reliance on sourcing materials from outside India.

The Indian government has been encouraging both Apple, and Apple's contract manufacturers, to enhance domestic value addition. They do not simply want to see more assembly happening locally, but rather an entire electronics ecosystem, which can sustain jobs and competitiveness through trade.

While Apple is under political pressure from the US to enhance production back at home, India's policies and incentives offer an attractive environment to expand its manufacturing effort. India is focused on building the entire value chain, from components to final assembly to ensure sustainability and a larger portion of the global electronics export share. This commitment is indicative of India's ambition to be an electronics destination.
