
Odisha Enters Semiconductor Manufacturing with SiCSem
- SiCSem to build India’s first silicon carbide chip plant in Odisha.
- Project investment of ₹2,067 crore to create 5,000 new jobs.
- Facility to produce 60,000 wafers annually for diverse tech applications.
Signifying an important milestone in Odisha’s semiconductor manufacturing journey, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi conducted the groundbreaking ceremony for India’s first complete silicon carbide semiconductor production facility being established by SiCSem Private Limited.
The project, which has recently received approval from the Union cabinet, will be established close to the state capital with an investment of Rs 2,067 crore. The facility is set to generate approximately 5,000 direct and indirect job opportunities.
SicSem Private Limited is partnering with Clas-SiC Wafer Fab Ltd., UK, to establish an integrated plant for Silicon Carbide (SiC)-based compound semiconductors in Info Valley, Bhubaneswar.
The initiative aims to produce Silicon Carbide devices. This compound semiconductor fabrication facility will possess an annual output of 60,000 wafers and a packaging capability of 96 million units. The suggested products will find uses in missiles, defense gear, electric vehicles, railways, rapid chargers, data center racks, household appliances, and solar power inverters.

“The Centre’s guidance and the India Semiconductor Mission’s initiatives have enabled the state to attract world-class investment, cutting-edge technology, and high-value employment opportunities,” CM Majhi expressed appreciation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for aiding Odisha in its pursuit of becoming a semiconductor hub.
SicSem Private Limited is setting up a Research and Innovation Centre worth Rs 64 crores at IIT-Bhubaneswar. Union Electronics and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has sanctioned Rs 5 crore from his MPLAD fund for the ‘NaMo Semiconductor Laboratory’ at the institution.
Officials report that the Odisha Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation has allocated 23 acres of land to SicSem Private Limited for the new compound semiconductor manufacturing facility.
