  • Initiative builds India’s first used-oil circular economy.
  • Project targets recycling and safe disposal of waste oil.

Indian Oil Corporation has joined hands with Re Sustainability to setup Indias first integrated used-oil circular economy ecosystem, which will not only help in better collection, recycling and reuse of used lubricating oil but also will take environmental concerns into consideration and at the same time, will continue the sustainable waste-management practices in the energy sector.

The two companies under the partnership have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to set up a structured pan-India system for collecting and processing used oil. This step shall establish a clear and accountable chain of operations to guarantee that waste oil resulting from industries is collected in the safest manner and then sent to the authorised recycling facilities. Improper disposal of used oil leads to contamination of soil and water resources.

The project through establishing a well-organized circular ecosystem not only aims to prevent criminal act of dumping but also by responsible recycling and re-refining processes recover the precious materials. This is a step forward in India’s overall sustainability and resource-efficiency targets.

Further, the tie-up will utilize Indian Oil's vast fuel and lubricant distribution network and Re Sustainability's prowess in environmental services and waste management. Both the companies are looking at the possibility of an effective infrastructure for the collection, logistics, and treatment of used oil in various industrial sectors.

The corporate members emphasized that the program aligns with the Indian government's aim to transition to a circular economy, where waste materials are recovered and repurposed rather than discarded. The initiative aims to reduce environmental risk, improve regulatory compliance, and promote sustainable resource use in the energy industry by establishing a formal system for recycling used oil.
