Sonowal Launches Maritime Reform, Digital Push
Synopsis: Sarbananda Sonowal launches Maritime Reform Utsav to accelerate digital governance, maritime modernisation, and faster reforms aimed at strengthening India’s ports, shipping infrastructure, and global trade competitiveness.
Sarbananda Sonowal has unveiled the “Maritime Reform Utsav” initiative while outlining a comprehensive roadmap aimed at accelerating digital governance and fast-tracking reforms across India’s maritime sector. The announcement came during a high-level review meeting of the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways focused on aligning maritime modernisation with the vision of “Viksit Bharat 2047.”
The reform initiative focuses on improving efficiency, transparency, ease of doing business, and technological integration across ports, shipping operations, and maritime administration. Officials stated that digital transformation and governance reforms will play a central role in modernising India’s maritime ecosystem and strengthening the country’s position in global trade and logistics networks.
During the review meeting, Sonowal emphasised the importance of adopting technology-driven governance systems to streamline regulatory processes and improve service delivery in the maritime sector. The ministry plans to expand digital platforms, automate administrative functions, and enhance coordination between ports, shipping authorities, and logistics stakeholders.

The roadmap includes faster implementation of infrastructure projects, simplified procedures for maritime businesses, and stronger integration of digital systems under broader national initiatives such as Digital India and Maritime India Vision 2030. Authorities are also focusing on sustainable growth, port-led industrialisation, and improving India’s competitiveness in international shipping and logistics.
India’s maritime sector has witnessed significant expansion in recent years under programmes such as Sagarmala, which has supported port modernisation, inland waterways development, and coastal infrastructure projects. Government data shows that major ports handled record cargo volumes during FY 2025–26 while vessel turnaround times improved substantially due to operational reforms and infrastructure upgrades.
The ministry is increasingly integrating emerging technologies including artificial intelligence, cloud platforms, automation systems, and digital monitoring tools to modernise maritime governance. Previous digital initiatives launched by the ministry include the e-Samudra platform, AI-powered examination systems, and integrated maritime service portals designed to improve transparency and efficiency.
Officials believe faster reforms and digital governance improvements will help India strengthen supply chains, enhance trade competitiveness, attract investment, and support long-term growth in the blue economy. Analysts note that maritime infrastructure and logistics modernisation remain critical for India’s ambitions to become a major global manufacturing and trade hub.
