In order to enhance recycling via electric furnaces to reach production and sustainability goals, the All India Induction Furnace Association and the Sustainable Steel Manufacturers Association have entered into a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with IIT Bombay.

Association president Yogesh Mandhani stated that the collaboration with IIT took two years to develop. It includes several industrial visits by the IIT teams to gain insights into production processes, obstacles, and possibilities. "Under the MoU framework, member industries will present technical challenges and innovation needs to IITB. The institute will assign expert faculty and research teams to co-develop solutions, drive technological advancements, and raise quality and safety benchmarks in steel production," he said.

Industry leaders noted that a key reason for collaborating with the IIT is the Ministry of Steel’s strong commitment to promoting research and development, as well as partnerships between academia and industry to drive India's next advancement in steel manufacturing excellence.

Mandhani mentioned that the partnership with IIT Bombay is not merely a temporary initiative but signifies the start of a prolonged collaboration. "As India advances toward its ambitious target of 300 million tons of steel production by 2030, the need for sustainable, high-quality steel manufacturing has never been more critical. The association with the IIT is aligning with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of ‘Make in India' and ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat', and to fulfill the goal of producing quality steel for the world," he said.
