  • Viasat explores India partnerships across launch, satellite manufacturing and software as the country’s space sector expands
  • India seen as a key growth market, driven by rising aviation, defence demand and strong tech talent, with ties including Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited
  • Hybrid satellite networks likely to dominate, even as rivals like SpaceX’s Starlink and OneWeb gain ground

The global space economy expansion allows satellite communications companies to establish new business prospects through India's developing space market, which American satcom company Viasat uses to seek partnership opportunities throughout its broad space industry network in India.

The Global President of Commercial Operations at Viasat Ben Palmer, stated that his organization studies potential partnerships throughout the complete space industry development process, which includes all aspects from space launch to satellite building to terminal equipment and software connection.

He highlighted Viasat India space partnership, Viasat launch manufacturing software India, India space industry collaboration, and satellite technology India as key areas the company is exploring for deeper cooperation.

Palmer described India as a market that displays continuous energy and ambition because its population base continues expanding while its economic power and technological strength keep developing. Palmer identified India as an emerging market for satellite connectivity because its aviation industry is developing rapidly, and its defense needs increase while its middle class grows.

Viasat maintains a long-term relationship with India through its partnerships with Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited, which go back to the time when India became a founding member of Inmarsat.

The satellite communications sector has gained momentum in recent years as governments and industries look to connect remote areas, strengthen defense communications and support maritime and aviation connectivity.

The market now faces increased competition because SpaceX's Starlink and Eutelsat's OneWeb have entered the industry as new low-earth orbit competitors. Palmer said the future of the industry lies in hybrid satellite networks that combine multiple orbital technologies.

Such integrated networks would deliver seamless connectivity across aviation, maritime, enterprise and government applications. Viasat is researching new technologies, which include direct-to-device satellite connectivity and its partnerships within India's private space industry.

The company is currently negotiating with Indian partners, which include the Indian Space Research Organization to build satellite capacity and explore joint ventures that support India's Make in India goals.
