UP Installs Lightning Detection Sensors in Five Districts
Uttar Pradesh is installing lightning detection sensors in five districts with IITM Pune's support. A separate ₹1.33 crore early-warning project will cover 32 villages in Sonbhadra to help reduce lightning-related fatalities.
The Uttar Pradesh government is installing lightning detection sensors in five districts in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM), Pune, to reduce fatalities caused by lightning strikes and strengthen disaster preparedness. The initiative aims to improve the detection of lightning activity and deliver timely warnings to people in vulnerable areas.
The sensors are being installed in Etah, Meerut, Balrampur, Lakhimpur Kheri and Sonbhadra. According to an official statement issued by the state government, the system will help authorities identify lightning activity quickly and issue alerts, allowing residents to move to safer locations before potential strikes.

Farmers working in fields, labourers employed in open areas, villagers and livestock rearers are among those most exposed to lightning risks during the rainy season. Timely alerts are expected to help these communities take precautions while enabling local administrations and disaster management agencies to coordinate preventive measures.
In a separate initiative, the government is installing a Lightning Detection and Early Warning System in 32 villages in the Duddhi block of Sonbhadra district. The project has been allocated ₹1.33 crore and is intended to ensure that residents in high-risk locations receive warnings early enough to respond to approaching lightning threats.
The initiative reflects a shift in the state's disaster management strategy from responding to emergencies after they occur to identifying risks in advance and reducing potential damage. By improving weather monitoring and early-warning capabilities, the government aims to strengthen preparedness at the community level.
Collaboration with IITM Pune is expected to support the deployment of technology for lightning detection and risk reduction. The effectiveness of the initiative will depend on the timely dissemination of alerts and public awareness of the safety measures required when warnings are issued.
