
BrahMos Manufacturing Unit in Lucknow to Produce 80-100 Missiles Annually
BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles are a joint project by Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Russia's NPO Mashinostroyeniya, and are an important part of India's arsenal with their production being based in Uttar Pradesh.
On May 11, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will inaugurate a production unit of BrahMos missiles in Lucknow that is projected to produce 80 to 100 missiles in a year. The goverment unit was inaugurated in a joint-effort with the Defence Industrial Corridor, which was announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a conference of global investors in 2018.
“The inauguration of the BrahMos unit worth Rs 300 crore will certainly be a big boost to the project in the state. About 1,600 hectares of land have been allotted for the defence corridor project in the first phase, with big companies having already signed MOUs. We are also in talks with BHEL for one of its units to come here,” said a senior government office at Uttar Pradesh Expressways Industrial Development Authority (UPIEDA), which is the nodal agency for the project.
As the BrahMos unit has been earmarked around 80 acres, out of total of118 hectares allocated to 12 companies in Lucknow node including Aerolloy Technologies whose products, officials claimed, were used in space missions like Chandrayaan as well as fighter aircraft.
