Ford, a major American car company, choose to use a combination of electric vehicles, hybrids, and internal combustion engine parts for the manufacturing strategy at the Maraimalainagar plant. The company is developing EV and hybrid technology to create affordable compact cars that will first be sold in South East Asian markets.

Reports indicate that a high-ranking group led by Ford Motor Company CEO Jim Farley is developing new compact products in electric vehicle and hybrid variations. When contacted, the Ford India spokesman said in an email response: "Further information about the type of manufacturing and other details will be disclosed in due course. We have no further updates to share at this time."

Ford is reconsidering its strategy in response to the fluctuating demand for electric vehicles. The growing demand for electric vehicles is facing challenges globally, especially in regions like China and South East Asia, leading to a need to mitigate the risks by also investing in hybrid and internal combustion engine vehicles. Further reports suggest that the decision on the type of production planned for the Chennai plant will be made by Ford management in December following the conclusion of the US Elections.

The firm is planning to manufacture a variety of vehicles that might eventually be introduced in India as well. Auto industry experts suggest that with the lukewarm interest in electric cars in India and the slow growth of this market segment, it is wise to manage risks by also offering hybrid and ICE models.
