GAIL commissions its subsidiary GMPL's 1.25 MTPA PTA plant in Mangalore, expanding domestic petrochemical capacity and supporting India's polyester, textile and packaging industries.

GAIL India Limited, through its wholly owned subsidiary GAIL Mangalore Petrochemicals Limited (GMPL), has commissioned a 1.25 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) Purified Terephthalic Acid (PTA) manufacturing plant in the Mangalore Special Economic Zone (MSEZ), Karnataka. The facility marks a major development in the company’s efforts to expand its presence in the downstream petrochemicals sector and strengthen India's domestic manufacturing capacity.

The commissioning was announced. The plant was originally established by JBF Petrochemicals Limited (JBPL), which subsequently underwent the Corporate Insolvency Resolution Process (CIRP). GAIL acquired the company in 2023 through the insolvency resolution process under a plan approved by the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT). Following the acquisition, GMPL undertook extensive revival and refurbishment work to restore the facility to operational status.

The revival involved engineering, technological and operational challenges, requiring coordinated efforts from the GMPL team, technology partners, consultants, contractors and other stakeholders. The successful commissioning brings the previously acquired industrial asset back into operation and strengthens GAIL’s portfolio of downstream petrochemical products.

PTA is a critical raw material used in the production of polyester fibre, polyester yarn, polyethylene terephthalate (PET) resin and other polyester-based products. These materials serve several industries, particularly textiles, apparel and packaging. With an installed production capacity of 1.25 million tonnes annually, the Mangalore facility is expected to increase the availability of PTA within India and support the requirements of domestic polyester manufacturers.

The commissioning is also expected to contribute towards reducing India's dependence on imported PTA. By increasing domestic production, the facility could strengthen supply availability for downstream industries and support the expansion of the country's polyester value chain. The development is significant for sectors that rely on consistent supplies of petrochemical feedstock for manufacturing operations.

The plant's location near New Mangalore Port provides logistical advantages for transporting raw materials and finished products. Dedicated logistics infrastructure has been developed to facilitate the movement of materials to and from the facility. GAIL plans to market the PTA manufactured at the plant under the brand name G-Tex, using its established marketing network and customer reach to serve industrial buyers.

The commissioning represents a strategic step in GAIL's efforts to diversify its petrochemical operations beyond its existing business segments. With the Mangalore facility now operational, the company aims to strengthen its position in the domestic petrochemical market while supporting the growth of India's textile, packaging and polyester manufacturing industries.
