India and Guatemala discuss Buyer-Seller Meetings in textiles, construction, waste management, two-wheelers and CCTV systems to expand trade and investment ties.

India and Guatemala have discussed expanding bilateral trade, investment and commercial cooperation, with a focus on connecting businesses from both countries across several industries. The discussions included plans to organise Buyer-Seller Meetings (BSMs) in sectors such as textiles, construction materials, waste management, two-wheelers and closed-circuit television (CCTV) systems.

The discussions took place during a meeting between India's Ambassador to Guatemala, Raj Kumar Singh, and Guatemalan Congresswoman Ivana Bonilla. The engagement focused on identifying opportunities to strengthen economic relations, encourage business partnerships and promote greater participation by companies in both markets.

According to the Indian Embassy in Guatemala, the proposed BSMs are intended to bring together Indian exporters and Guatemalan buyers, enabling businesses to explore commercial opportunities, establish direct connections and identify potential partnerships. The initiative is expected to facilitate discussions on product requirements, market access and investment prospects across the identified sectors.

Textiles represent an important area of potential cooperation, given India's established manufacturing and export capabilities. Construction materials and waste management also offer opportunities for companies to exchange technologies, products and expertise. Meanwhile, the inclusion of two-wheelers and CCTV systems reflects interest in expanding commercial engagement in automotive and security-related products.

The proposed meetings form part of broader efforts to strengthen India-Guatemala economic relations through trade promotion and private-sector engagement. Indian companies already have a presence in Guatemala across pharmaceuticals, textiles, automobiles and information technology. Indian two- and three-wheeler brands, including Hero, Mahindra, TVS and Bajaj, have established market recognition in the country.

Bilateral trade has also provided a foundation for expanding commercial ties. According to the Ministry of External Affairs' bilateral brief, India's exports to Guatemala reached approximately US$559 million in 2023-24, while imports from the Central American country stood at around US$30.27 million. Indian exports include pharmaceuticals, textiles, automobiles, machinery and engineering products, while imports from Guatemala include wood, agricultural commodities and other materials.

Diplomatic relations between India and Guatemala were established on May 16, 1972. Over the years, both countries have pursued cooperation through diplomatic exchanges, trade promotion initiatives and development partnerships. Their engagement has also extended to areas such as healthcare, agriculture, education, renewable energy and capacity-building.

The latest discussions highlight the importance both countries place on strengthening business-to-business connections and diversifying trade. By facilitating buyer-seller interactions and encouraging commercial partnerships, India and Guatemala aim to identify new opportunities for exporters, investors and businesses across multiple sectors.
