  • GE Aerospace to set up F404 engine depot in India
  • Supports Tejas fleet maintenance and faster turnaround
  • Boosts defence indigenization and operational readiness

GE Aerospace has revealed its intention to set up an exclusive F404 engine maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) depot in India to back the Indian Air Force's Tejas light combat aircraft. This step is a great leap towards the enhancement of India's indigenous defense system as well as the fighter jet’s operational readiness.

The center will primarily be engaged in the servicing of the F404 engine, which is the Tejas aircraft's power plant. The overhaul process will be expedited, and the need to rely on overseas support will be minimized. At present, the engine overhaul process necessitates international logistics and results in prolonged downtime, thereby affecting the availability of the fleet.

By establishing a local MRO center, GE Aerospace's objective is to make the lifecycle support process more effective and efficient so that the fleet can be sustained more easily. This project is in perfect harmony with the wider movement of Indian defence indigenization through programmes such as "Make in India" and "Atmanirbhar Bharat."

The development of local maintenance capabilities goes a long way in lessening dependence on foreign supply chains while, at the same time, building technical know-how of the country. This center will also serve as a skill development platform, besides opening up avenues for the collaboration with Indian industry partners.

Strategically, the new asset will allow the Indian Air Force greater operational freedom as it will enable them to get hold of the essential engine support more rapidly and easily. As a major part of India's home-grown defence manufacturing efforts, the Tejas programme is likely to get a big boost from being able to maintain the aircraft more easily, especially since there is a plan to increase the number of jets in the coming years.

The decision is also indicative of the strengthening defence-industrial ties between India and the US, where there is an increasing focus on technology transfer, co-development as well as production capabilities at the local level. Besides, it shows faith in India's potential as an aerospace maintenance and manufacturing center.

In sum, the setting up of the F404 engine depot is a crucial step in India's defence readiness and industrial capability that will cater to both present operational requirements and strategic objectives in the aerospace sector over a long period.
