- Government plans modern postal logistics infrastructure for India Post
- Initiative aims to strengthen e-commerce and parcel delivery capabilities
- India Post expands digital services with technology-driven modernization initiatives
The Indian government is preparing a comprehensive postal logistics infrastructure plan aimed at transforming India Post into a modern logistics and parcel delivery network aligned with global standards. Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia announced the initiative while inaugurating the renovated Nehru Place Post Office in New Delhi, highlighting the growing importance of postal networks in India’s rapidly expanding digital and e-commerce economy.
According to the minister, the proposed plan will focus on upgrading India Post’s parcel handling and logistics infrastructure using advanced supply-chain systems similar to those used in developed countries. The move comes as e-commerce volumes continue to surge, increasing demand for faster, technology-driven, and more reliable delivery services across urban and rural regions alike.
India Post currently handles nearly 7.5 crore parcels and around 90 crore letters annually, demonstrating the scale of its nationwide operations. Beyond traditional mail services, post offices have also become key access points for citizen services, processing over 2.12 crore passports and nearly 15 crore Aadhaar-related services so far. These figures underline the organisation’s expanding role in India’s public service and digital governance ecosystem.

The government has already invested around ₹5,800 crore in postal modernization initiatives. These upgrades have enabled features such as OTP-based deliveries, real-time SMS tracking, and improved transparency for customers. Officials believe the new logistics infrastructure plan will further enhance operational efficiency, optimise supply chains, and strengthen India Post’s competitiveness in the fast-growing logistics market.
The broader strategy aligns with the government’s long-term vision of turning India Post from a conventional mail-focused organisation into a technology-enabled logistics powerhouse. Earlier, Scindia had stated that the department aims to significantly increase revenue while improving service delivery through automation, route optimization, and digital transformation.
India Post also maintains one of the world’s largest postal networks, with over 1.6 lakh post offices and approximately 4.5 lakh employees, many of them operating in rural areas. Officials believe this extensive reach gives the organization a major advantage in supporting India’s growing e-commerce ecosystem and connecting underserved regions to modern logistics infrastructure.
The initiative reflects a broader push to modernise public infrastructure and improve citizen-centric services as India moves toward its long-term “Viksit Bharat 2047” development goals.
