India and Argentina deepen economic ties as edible oil trade expands, alongside growing cooperation in agriculture, energy, critical minerals and investment.

India and Argentina are strengthening their economic relationship, with edible oils emerging as an important component of bilateral trade alongside cooperation in agriculture, energy, critical minerals and other sectors.

Argentina is among India’s key sources of edible oil imports, particularly soybean oil. India’s large and growing demand for vegetable oils has created an important trade channel between the two countries, with Argentina also supplying other agricultural commodities to the Indian market. Government data show that edible oil imports from Argentina, along with supplies from Indonesia, Malaysia and Brazil, continue to support domestic availability.

The trade relationship extends beyond agricultural commodities. India and Argentina have been developing cooperation in critical minerals, renewable energy, pharmaceuticals, technology and other areas. Argentina is a major producer of lithium, making it relevant to India’s efforts to secure supplies of minerals needed for electric vehicles, batteries and clean energy technologies.

Energy is another area of bilateral engagement. Indian companies have established a presence in Argentina’s energy sector, while both countries have explored opportunities for greater cooperation in renewable energy and related technologies.

Agriculture remains a significant pillar of the relationship. Argentina’s agricultural production complements India’s requirements for food and edible oils, while Indian companies and businesses have opportunities to expand their presence in Argentina through investment, technology and services.

The two countries have also been working to broaden economic engagement through stronger private-sector participation. Business and government representatives have identified opportunities to improve market access, increase investment and develop longer-term commercial partnerships.

The growing economic relationship comes as India expands its engagement with Latin America. Argentina has identified India as an important partner in Asia, particularly in agriculture, energy and critical minerals, while India sees Latin American countries as important sources of resources and markets for Indian goods and services.

Edible oils therefore remain an important part of the India-Argentina trade relationship, while cooperation in critical minerals, energy and agriculture provides additional areas for diversification. The broader engagement is aimed at expanding trade and investment beyond traditional commodity flows and creating opportunities for businesses in both countries.
