  • Progress post PM Modi's Tianjin SCO visit; BRICS summit ahead.

India and China, during a meeting in Shanghai closing today, reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening their bilateral ties. On the occasion of the opening of the SCO Cooperation Centre for Metabolic Diseases, which is an initiative under the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) framework, India's Consul General in Shanghai, Pratik Mathur, met the Mayor of Shanghai, Gong Zheng.

The conversation was about healthcare cooperation and also multilateral engagement on a larger scale. The Mayor was happy to note the improvements in India, China relations that have taken place recently, especially after Prime Minister Narendra Modi's trip to China for the SCO Summit in Tianjin in August 2025. He also welcomed the resumption of direct air links between Shanghai and Indian cities as an important positive development.

The Consul General Mathur extended greetings on behalf of India to senior Chinese officials and thanked them for their warm reception. He highlighted that further improvements in the bilateral ties would facilitate the collaboration in the multilateral forums such as the SCO and BRICS. Mathur pointed out that India will be hosting the BRICS Leaders' Summit later this year and expressed his belief that the two countries would gain mutually from the regional and global platforms.

The meeting, which was shared on X along with the message "United for a Healthy Future, " was a moment when the leaders highlighted healthcare as a priority area through the new SCO centre and also pointed out the positive momentum in the ties after the recent high, level engagements.

Opening the SCO Cooperation Centre for the Metabolic Diseases in Shanghai is only the beginning of SCO, wide cooperation towards public health challenges, and the bilateral talks have further strengthened the image of India as a constructive and positive factor in the organisation, which is based on the three pillars: Security, Connectivity, and Opportunity, and this is what PM Modi had stated in his earlier remarks at the SCO.
