India, Japan Hold Talks to Boost Defence Ties, Security
India and Japan discuss defence technology, joint exercises and regional security in New Delhi, with both sides also focusing on economic security, supply chains, technology and broader Indo-Pacific cooperation.
India and Japan held high-level discussions in New Delhi to strengthen bilateral defence cooperation, including defence technology collaboration, joint military exercises and regional security coordination in the Indo-Pacific. The talks took place between Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh and a visiting delegation of Japanese parliamentarians from the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), led by Taro Kono.
The discussions focused on expanding practical cooperation between the two countries’ defence establishments. The Indian Ministry of Defence said both sides exchanged views on strengthening defence technology partnerships, joint exercises and regional security cooperation aimed at supporting peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific.

The Japanese delegation is visiting India under the India-Japan Distinguished Visitors Programme from September 18 to 22. Besides Kono, the delegation includes LDP Policy Research Council Deputy Chairperson Kenji Nakanishi, Acting Director of the LDP International Bureau Karen Makishima and Sakon Yamamoto.
The visit has also covered broader economic and strategic issues. On September 21, the Japanese lawmakers met Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri to discuss areas including defence, economic security, supply-chain resilience, trade, investment, technology, innovation and people-to-people ties. The delegation also visited India's technology and innovation ecosystem.
The latest discussions follow a series of recent India-Japan engagements in defence and security. In August, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Japanese Defence Minister Shinjiro Koizumi agreed to deepen maritime security cooperation, defence technology collaboration and defence research. They also signed an arrangement providing a framework for cooperation between the Indian Navy and Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force.

Meanwhile, the Indian Air Force and Japan Air Self-Defense Force are conducting Exercise Veer Guardian-2026 in Jodhpur from September 9 to 22. The exercise involves Indian Tejas, Su-30MKI and Rafale aircraft and Japanese F-2A fighters, with activities covering operational missions, mission planning and technical exchanges.
The latest talks therefore add to ongoing efforts by India and Japan to expand cooperation across defence, technology, economic security and regional engagement.
