Synopsis: India and Japan have reviewed bilateral defence cooperation at the 8th Defence Policy Dialogue, reaffirming their commitment to deeper military collaboration, Indo-Pacific security, defence technology, and regional stability.

India and Japan have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral defence and security ties during the 8th India Japan Defence Policy Dialogue held in New Delhi. Senior defence officials from both sides sort of reviewed the progress on ongoing military cooperation, and also looked at fresh opportunities to widen collaboration in defence, maritime security, technology and regional stability. This dialogue seems to underscore the growing strategic partnership between the two nations and their shared thinking for a free and open, inclusive Indo-Pacific, overall.

The meeting was co-chaired by senior defence officials from the Ministries of Defence of India and Japan. Both sides did a detailed run-through of the defence relationship, basically assessing how well the initiatives that were agreed on during prior high-level engagements had been put into action. They noted, and also seemed content, with the steady gains that have been made in strengthening military cooperation and they reaffirmed their resolve to further their strategic engagement across multiple domains, more or less.

The main thing in the dialogue was to boost cooperation between the armed forces of both countries, not just on paper but in a more practical way. The officials talked about steps to widen joint military exercises, to add more personnel swaps, to solidify operational coordination, and also to get better interoperability across their defence forces. All these moves are likely to improve mutual understanding and readiness, and in the same time help with regional peace and security.

Maritime security came up a lot in the talks, and both countries seemed to agree, that protecting freedom of navigation is key, keeping secure sea lanes of communication, and also ensuring stability across the Indo-Pacific region. India and Japan also talked about how they can take this further by boosting cooperation between their naval forces through more exercises, exchanging information more regularly, and carrying out coordinated maritime activities, in order to respond to the security challenges that are still evolving.

The dialogue also went over defence technology and industrial cooperation. Both  sides talked about chances to spur cooperation in defence manufacturing, research, innovation, and developing more advanced military technologies. They also, more or less, pinned down that broadening ties between defence industries and backing tech exchange were viewed as key directions for strengthening long- term strategic cooperation and helping defence modernisation move forward.

Officials traded thoughts on the regional and global security situation, touching on changes across the Indo-Pacific. They also reaffirmed, again, their pledge to stand by international law, to respect sovereignty and territorial integrity, and to push forward a rules-based international order. Both sides stressed that it matters to cooperate with like-minded partners, in order to tackle emerging security challenges and keep regional stability in place, even as things keep shifting.

The discussions showed how cybersecurity, space security and the newer technologies are becoming more and more crucial for modern defence cooperation. India and Japan said they would keep exploring collaboration across these strategic areas, while at the same time they’d strengthen the institutional set ups so there can be regular consultations and better policy coordination.

The dialogue also looked at the progress under the India–Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership, which has grown a lot over the last decade. Defence cooperation has come up as one of the main pillars of this partnership, and it is matched by more teamwork in trade, infrastructure, digital technology, clean energy, supply chain resilience, and people to people exchanges.

Both countries recognized the positive results from their bilateral as well as multilateral military engagements over the last few years, including naval exercises and defence exchanges. They said they want to keep that momentum going, and rather than just stopping there, they will look for new chances of practical cooperation, strengthening abilities, and exchanging know how, between their armed forces.

The 8th India-Japan Defence Policy Dialogue wrapped up with a shared promise to keep strengthening defence ties, through more sustained engagement, and regular consultations. In doing so, by extending cooperation in things like military exchanges, maritime security, defence technology, and strategic coordination, India and Japan hope to further reinforce their partnership, while also helping to maintain peace, security, and stability across the Indo-Pacific region.
