Synopsis: Prime Minister Narendra Modi meets Mauritius Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam in Seychelles to review India-Mauritius ties, focusing on strategic partnership, connectivity, healthcare, sustainable development, and cooperation in the Indian Ocean region.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi meets his Mauritian counterpart Navinchandra Ramgoolam in Victoria, Seychelles, to discuss the full range of India-Mauritius bilateral relations and review progress across key areas of cooperation. The meeting takes place on the sidelines of Seychelles’ Golden Jubilee National Day celebrations.

The two leaders review the progress of the India-Mauritius Enhanced Strategic Partnership and discuss ways to further deepen cooperation in sectors including healthcare, connectivity, sustainable development, and the blue economy. Prime Minister Modi highlights India’s continued commitment to supporting Mauritius’ development priorities through ongoing projects and partnerships.

During the discussion, both sides emphasise the importance of strengthening collaboration under India’s Vision MAHASAGAR and the Neighbourhood First policy. The leaders reaffirm their shared commitment to promoting peace, stability, and prosperity in the Indian Ocean region while enhancing cooperation between the two countries.

The meeting marks the fourth interaction between Prime Minister Modi and Prime Minister Ramgoolam since the latter assumed office in November 2024. The continued engagement reflects the close historical, cultural, and strategic ties between India and Mauritius, supported by strong people-to-people connections.

India and Mauritius still have, close cooperation in maritime security, economic development technology, education and the more “capacity building” side of things. This link also seems to matter a lot for boosting regional cooperation across the Indian Ocean, like, in a real practical way.

During the conversation, the leaders also got into the implementation of India’s Special Economic Package that was extended to Mauritius. The steps under that framework are meant to help Mauritius move ahead through better infrastructure, stronger connectivity, healthcare support and a set of sustainable development projects.

The whole interaction is happening while India keeps working more broadly to tighten partnerships with Indian Ocean countries; mostly via economic cooperation, maritime security measures, and those development-oriented collaborations. For both countries, the region is seen as an area of shared opportunity as well as strategic importance, not just something “out there”.

The meeting between Prime Minister Modi and Prime Minister Ramgoolam shows that India-Mauritius relations are still expanding, steadily. With attention on development, connectivity and regional stability, both sides want to deepen their long-standing partnership and cooperation in the years ahead.
