India Signs ₹1,950 Cr Defence Deal to guard borders
- India signs ₹1,950 crore radar deal with BEL
- Indigenous systems to boost border air surveillance
- Strengthens defence self-reliance and local industry
India has entered into a 1,950 crore defence deal with Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) to buy advanced mountain radar systems, which not only strengthen the country's air defense capability but significantly support the local manufacturing sector as well. This deal finalized by the Ministry of Defence will provide the Indian Air Force with two ultra-modern radar systems and the related infrastructure.
These radars were indigenously designed and developed at the Electronics and Radar Development Establishment under the Defence Research and Development Organisation, and will be manufactured and installed by BEL. The agreement is a Buy (Indian - Indigenously Designed, Developed and Manufactured) type one, which perfectly complements the government thrust on the domestic capability building initiative.
Mountain radars are specially made for deployment in the highest and roughest terrains, where most of the conventional radar systems become unusable due to the geographical and climatic challenges. These radars can identify and track various air threats like fighter aircraft, drones, and cruise missiles. So, they will be capable of dramatically improving the level of alertness in border areas that are sensitive. Provision of such systems and their deployment is expected to give a big boost to the early warning and response mechanism in areas of strategic importance.

Broadly speaking, this procurement reiterates India's focus on the development of an integrated air defence system, at the same time, diminishing dependence on foreign imports. In the way of native design and production, the initiative not only supports the 'Aatmanirbhar Bharat' drive, but also encourages the involvement of the domestic industry and the achievement of technological self-reliance.
Besides, implementation of the programme will create job opportunities and give a boost to the indigenous defence manufacturing sector through the engagement of multiple suppliers and MSMEs. In a nutshell, the transaction not only underlines one aspect of the enhancement of operational readiness by making it possible to operate in difficult terrains but also the other aspect of long term achievement of strategic goals through self-reliance in defence and modernization.
While India is on the path of equipping itself with state-of-the-art surveillance and defence systems, it is quite conceivable that such types of arrangements will become an important component in the comprehensive security architecture of the nation.
