India Tests Advanced Agni Missile With Multiple Warheads

India has successfully conducted a flight test of its advanced Agni missile equipped with Multiple Independently Targetable Re-entry Vehicle (MIRV) capability, marking a major milestone in the country’s strategic defence programme. The test was carried out from Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Island off the Odisha coast and demonstrated India’s ability to strike multiple targets using a single missile system.

The missile was launched with multiple payloads aimed at different targets spread across the Indian Ocean region. According to official statements, all mission objectives were successfully achieved during the trial. Ground-based and ship-based telemetry and tracking systems closely monitored the missile’s trajectory from launch to payload impact, confirming the accuracy and effectiveness of the system.

The successful test significantly strengthens India’s strategic deterrence capability. MIRV technology enables a single ballistic missile to carry multiple warheads, each capable of independently targeting separate locations. This enhances operational flexibility and improves the missile’s ability to overcome enemy missile defence systems. Defence experts note that only a limited number of countries currently possess operational MIRV technology, placing India among an advanced group of strategic military powers.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), the Indian Army, and industry partners for the successful trial, stating that the achievement would further strengthen India’s defence preparedness amid evolving security challenges.

The latest test builds upon India’s earlier “Mission Divyastra” programme, under which the country first demonstrated MIRV capability in 2024. The Agni missile series remains a crucial component of India’s strategic defence infrastructure, with different variants covering short, intermediate, and intercontinental strike ranges. The advanced Agni missile tested during this mission is believed to have a range exceeding 5,000 kilometres, enabling coverage of distant strategic targets.

Industry observers view the successful trial as another major advancement in India’s indigenous missile development efforts. As geopolitical and regional security dynamics continue evolving, such technological achievements are expected to reinforce India’s long-term strategic deterrence posture and defence self-reliance initiatives.
