Vietnam will strengthen its defense and strategic relations with India during President To Lam's New Delhi visit. The period from May 5 to 7, 2026 marks his first official foreign journey after he became president which will strengthen relations between the two countries.

The main focus of the visit involves a defence agreement which will cost approximately ₹5,800 crore to acquire the BrahMos missile system. The agreement, if approved, would become Vietnam's most significant military acquisition during recent years while boosting its maritime defence capabilities.

The agreement is expected to provide missile systems for shore operations together with training and logistics assistance and initial deployment solutions.

International negotiations are ongoing to reach an agreement, although Vietnam currently strengthens its maritime deterrent capabilities because of increasing geopolitical tensions in the South China Sea.
