India to Design 3nm Chips for the First Time, Says IT Minister Vaishnaw
Union Electronics and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw launched two cutting-edge semiconductor design centers of Renesas Electronics India Private in Noida and Bengaluru, signifying India's initial move into advanced 3nm chip development.
Describing it as a major leap for the country’s tech ambitions, the IT ministry said that this is “a milestone that places India firmly in the global league of semiconductor innovation.”The minister applauded the achievement, saying, “Designing at 3nm is truly next-generation. We’ve done 7nm and 5nm earlier, but this marks a new frontier.”Taking to social media platform X, he said, “In a first, 3nm chips will be designed in India.”
During the launch, Vaishnaw presented India's comprehensive strategy for the semiconductor sector, encompassing design, fabrication, ATMP (assembly, testing, marking, and packaging), equipment, chemicals, and gas supply chains. He highlighted the robust industry confidence observed at international gatherings such as Davos and mentioned significant investments already flowing in from firms like Applied Materials and Lam Research.
He stated, the new design center in UP is a vital move towards creating a nationwide ecosystem that leverages the abundant talent found throughout the nation. The government has been vigorously promoting the establishment of semiconductor design centers in the country. The minister additionally revealed the introduction of a new semiconductor educational kit designed to provide engineering students with practical experience in hardware.
“This integration of software and hardware learning will create truly industry-ready engineers. We are not just building infrastructure but investing in long-term talent development," he said.
