  • India, US hold constructive three-day trade talks
  • Focus on market access, tariffs, digital trade issues
  • Interim deal expected before comprehensive trade agreement

India and the United States have made measurable progress in advancing a proposed bilateral trade agreement (BTA) following a three-day round of negotiations in Washington, signaling renewed momentum in strengthening economic ties between the two countries.

Indian delegation led by senior commerce official Darpan Jain engaging with U.S. trade representatives to resolve key outstanding issues. Both sides described the talks as “constructive and positive,” reflecting a shared commitment to moving toward a balanced and mutually beneficial trade pact.

A wide range of critical areas were covered during the negotiations, including market access, non-tariff barriers, technical regulations, customs facilitation, and digital trade. These discussions form part of efforts to finalize an interim agreement, which will act as a stepping stone toward a broader and more comprehensive bilateral trade deal.

Officials indicated that both countries are working toward aligning their economic priorities while addressing long-standing sensitivities, particularly in sectors such as agriculture and tariffs. The talks also explored specific trade items and regulatory concerns, highlighting the complexity of negotiations between two large and diverse economies.

Despite progress, challenges remain. U.S. officials have acknowledged that gaps still exist, particularly around tariff structures and market protections. However, both sides have agreed to continue engagement and maintain negotiation momentum, underlining the strategic importance of the partnership.

The broader objective of the negotiations is to significantly expand bilateral trade, with both nations targeting $500 billion in trade by 2030, more than double current levels. This ambition reflects the growing importance of India-U.S. economic relations in the global trade landscape.

Overall, the latest round of talks highlights a pragmatic and forward-looking approach, where incremental progress through interim agreements is expected to pave the way for a comprehensive trade pact. The continued dialogue signals both countries’ intent to deepen economic cooperation while navigating complex policy and market dynamics.
