Synopsis: India and the US begin high-level trade discussions to recalibrate the proposed bilateral trade agreement, focusing on tariff issues, market access, and strengthening economic ties before the interim pact deadline.

India and the United States start high-level trade negotiations to revise and recalibrate the bilateral trade agreement following adjustments in US tariff policy that altered the previous negotiation framework. The aim of the negotiations is to resolve major trade issues and arrive at a finalised interim agreement between the two nations.

The talks are taking place between India’s Commerce and Industry Minister, Piyush Goyal and the United States Trade Representative, Jamieson Greer, in New Delhi. US Ambassador to India, Sergio Gor, is participating in the discussions, as both countries are working together to increase bilateral economic cooperation.

The focus of the negotiations is to develop an adjusted framework which was created earlier this year but has become uncertain as a result of the changes in US tariff policy. In addition, both countries are attempting to address outstanding matters related to tariffs, market access, trade facilitation and other areas that are related to the proposed agreement.

India and the US are aiming to conclude an interim trade agreement before July 24, when Washington’s temporary 10% tariff measure on imports from trading partners is scheduled to expire. The deadline has added urgency to the ongoing discussions as both sides seek to maintain momentum in trade negotiations.

The proposed agreement is expected to create a stronger foundation for expanding bilateral trade and investment between the two economies. Discussions include improving access for exporters, reducing trade barriers, and creating a more balanced framework for economic engagement.

The US has emphasised the importance of developing a fair and reciprocal trade arrangement that benefits businesses and consumers in both countries. India, meanwhile, is seeking favourable trade conditions that improve export competitiveness and provide greater market opportunities for Indian industries.

Trade between India and the US has expanded significantly over the years, with both countries increasingly focusing on areas such as technology, manufacturing, supply chains, and investment cooperation. A successful agreement could further strengthen economic ties and support deeper commercial partnerships.

The latest discussions come after several rounds of negotiations between officials from both sides covering issues such as goods trade, non-tariff measures, customs procedures, and economic cooperation. The two nations have reiterated their commitment to reaching a mutually beneficial arrangement.
