The government has directed FASTag-issuing banks to immediately verify vehicle registration numbers (VRNs) linked to FASTags, as part of a nationwide data-cleanup drive led by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to improve the accuracy of the electronic toll collection system.

The directive mandates banks to cross-check the registration details associated with each FASTag against official vehicle records. The move is aimed at eliminating inconsistencies, such as tags linked to incorrect, duplicate, or invalid vehicle numbers, issues that can disrupt toll operations and enable misuse of the system.

A key enforcement provision in this drive is the blacklisting of FASTags found to have mismatched or invalid VRNs. Once blacklisted, such tags will be rendered inactive at toll plazas, meaning users will be unable to make digital toll payments until the discrepancy is resolved. This could lead to delays and potential penalties for affected vehicle owners.
