  • Russia backs India amid BRICS disagreements on West Asia
  • Lavrov to visit Delhi, meet Jaishankar for talks
  • Support strengthens India’s role as BRICS consensus builder

Russia has extended strong diplomatic support to India as New Delhi navigates internal differences within the BRICS grouping over the ongoing West Asia conflict, reinforcing the strategic alignment between the two countries.

This is happening at a time when India, as the current BRICS chair, is trying to get all BRICS member countries on the same page about the issue that has them split. Differences especially between countries like Iran and the UAE have made it quite tough to get a single position from the group, thereby making India's diplomacy in the bloc even more challenging.

As a sign of support, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov will come to New Delhi around mid-May to take part in the BRICS Foreign Ministers' meeting. He will also have a one-to-one discussion with S. Jaishankar on BRICS and India-Russia relations matters.

This visit will provide an important opportunity to discuss matters related to global governance, regional conflicts, and strategic cooperation, in addition to laying the foundation for the forthcoming BRICS summit hosted by India later this year.

Russia's provide support is even more critical when India is trying to set itself as a harmony-maker in BRICS, juggling varied geopolitical interests while remaining neutral on controversial world issues. The backing of Moscow not only adds to India's diplomatic strength but also highlight the ever growing significance of the India-Russia strategic partnership.

At a broader level, the situation reflects the growing complexity within BRICS as the grouping expands and takes on more politically sensitive global issues. Divergent national interests among members are increasingly influencing decision-making, making consensus-building more challenging but also more critical.

Overall, Lavrov’s upcoming visit and Russia’s endorsement of India’s leadership highlight a coordinated effort to stabilise discussions within BRICS and ensure that the grouping remains effective in addressing global challenges despite internal differences.
