Tamil Nadu Signs ₹15,037 Crore BESS MoU with Vikram Solar
Synopsis: Tamil Nadu signs an MoU with Vikram Solar to establish a ₹15,037 crore Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) manufacturing plant in Tirunelveli, boosting clean energy manufacturing and creating over 2,600 employment opportunities.
The Tamil Nadu government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Vikram Solar to establish a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) manufacturing facility at the SIPCOT Industrial Park in Gangaikondan, Tirunelveli district.
The project, involving an investment of ₹15,037 crore, marks one of the state's largest clean energy manufacturing investments and reinforces its position as a key hub for renewable energy and advanced manufacturing.
The agreement was signed at the State Secretariat in the presence of Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay during an event organised by the Department of Industries, Investment Promotion and Commerce. The upcoming facility is expected to generate around 2,670 direct and indirect employment opportunities, contributing to regional industrial development and strengthening Tamil Nadu's manufacturing ecosystem.
Vikram Solar already has a significant manufacturing footprint in Tamil Nadu, operating solar photovoltaic (PV) module manufacturing facilities at Oragadam and Vallam. The company has also established an integrated manufacturing complex for solar PV cells and modules at Gangaikondan. The proposed BESS plant represents a major expansion of its operations and reflects its commitment to supporting India's transition towards clean energy and energy storage technologies.

Battery Energy Storage Systems play a critical role in improving grid stability and enabling greater integration of renewable energy sources such as solar and wind. As demand for energy storage solutions continues to grow, the new facility is expected to strengthen domestic manufacturing capabilities while supporting India's broader renewable energy and energy security goals.
The MoU was signed by Vikram Solar Chairman and Managing Director Gyanesh Chaudhary, Chief Executive Officer Arun Mittal, and Capital Investment Project Director Ashwini Agarwal, along with senior government officials. Industries Minister S. Keerthana and Chief Secretary M. Saikumar were also present during the signing ceremony.
The investment aligns with Tamil Nadu's strategy of attracting large-scale manufacturing projects in emerging sectors and further enhances the state's position as a preferred destination for green energy investments. With the addition of the BESS facility, Vikram Solar is set to deepen its contribution to India's clean energy value chain while supporting employment, industrial growth, and sustainable development.
