  • Two greenfield shipyards worth Rs 30,000 crore to be built.
  • Projects expected to create 55,000 jobs, directly and indirectly.
  • Advanced shipbuilding tech to boost Tamil Nadu’s maritime industry.

Tamil Nadu’s Industries Minister Dr T.R.B. Rajaa announced that the state is set to emerge as a global center for shipbuilding following the signing of two “ultra mega” investment agreements totaling Rs 30,000 crore to establish greenfield commercial shipyards in the region.

It is estimated that the deal with Cochin Shipyard Limited and Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited will generate 55,000 jobs. These contracts will also provide an opportunity to prepare the state's first Maritime Transport Manufacturing Policy, which is expected to be released later this year.

Cochin Shipyard will invest Rs 15,000 crore to develop a greenfield commercial shipyard that will be capable of handling large international orders, which will generate more than 10,000 jobs (4,000 direct and 6,000 indirect) in the first phase.

Mazagon Dock will equal the investment, establishing a second facility expected to provide jobs for more than 45,000 individuals (5,000 directly and 40,000 indirectly), primarily within the local ecosystem.

“These projects signal Tamil Nadu’s rise as India’s maritime manufacturing powerhouse,” Rajaa said in a post on social media.

This month, the state industrial promotion agency SIPCOT and V.O. Chidambaranar Port established a memorandum of understanding to create a special purpose vehicle to advance shipbuilding, offering the institutional framework for the new policy.

According to the minister, the two shipyards are anticipated to introduce advanced shipbuilding technology, enhance coastal infrastructure, and draw in related industries such as marine equipment manufacturers and logistics suppliers.

Officials remarked that these new shipyards would enhance India's maritime infrastructure and help position Tamil Nadu at the forefront of technological ability in the global shipbuilding industry. The projects are expected to attract related industries, strengthen the coastal economy, and spark a ripple effect of opportunities for small and medium-sized businesses.

With these advancements, Tamil Nadu aims to enhance its capabilities as a leader of maritime trade, logistics, and advanced shipbuilding in what will be a new phase of industrial growth for the state.
