Uzbekistan FM Begins India Visit for Key Bilateral Talks

Uzbekistan Foreign Minister Bakhtiyor Saidov has begun his India visit for talks with EAM S. Jaishankar, focusing on trade, connectivity, investment, and regional security to further strengthen the India–Uzbekistan strategic partnership.

Foreign Minister of Uzbekistan, Bakhtiyor Saidov, has started a visit to India for important talks with India’s External Affairs Minister, S. Jaishankar. The main topics of discussion would be likely to include enhancing trade relations, improving regional connectivity, deepening investments, and dealing with security issues of mutual concern. This visit is a clear indication of the strengthening relationship between these two countries.

The bilateral consultations will focus on the progress made regarding the implementation of decisions that were made previously during high-level consultations, while also seeking new ways of cooperation in areas of trade, investments, energy, digital technologies, pharmaceutics, education, and cultural contacts. India and Uzbekistan have been increasing their level of cooperation in recent years through the mechanism of consultations involving their ministers.

One of the important items on the agenda is that of trade and economic cooperation. The two nations are trying hard to enhance trade between each other through better access to markets, eliminating non-tariff barriers, and enhancing business interaction. They are also supposed to review the implementation of projects within the framework of the India-Uzbekistan Intergovernmental Commission.

Regional connectivity is yet another important issue on the agenda. India and Uzbekistan will be discussing how to enhance connectivity via the International North South Transport Corridor (INSTC) and the Chabahar port in Iran, which are considered as strategic entry points for enhancing connectivity between India and Central Asia. Improved connectivity will help promote trade and lower logistics costs.

The two leaders are also likely to discuss security related matters at both regional and international levels, such as Afghanistan’s situation, counterterrorism, and initiatives taken to stabilize the region of Central Asia. It is pertinent to mention that both nations are concerned about regional security threats and have always been supportive of increased cooperation against terrorism, extremism, and transnational crimes.

There has been an increasing level of strategic interaction between India and Uzbekistan through diplomatic talks, increased economic engagements, and collaboration at multilateral platforms like the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO). Recently, there have been renewed assurances by both parties on increasing cooperation in fields of trade, investments, technology, energy, and innovation during bilateral meetings and the India-Uzbekistan Intergovernmental Commission meeting.

The upcoming trip is anticipated to further cement the India-Uzbekistan strategic alliance through the exploration of new avenues for cooperation in trade, connectivity, energy, and security. As India continues to engage itself more and more with the Central Asian region, a stronger relationship with Uzbekistan is likely to help bring about regional stability and economic integration among other benefits.
