Synopsis: Indian Council of Medical Research launches India’s largest biomedical innovation platform and transfers 41 healthcare technologies to industry partners to accelerate indigenous medical innovation and healthcare manufacturing.

Indian Council of Medical Research has launched India’s largest biomedical innovation platform and transferred 41 healthcare technologies to industry partners, marking a major push to strengthen indigenous medical innovation, healthcare manufacturing, and translational research capabilities. The initiative aims to accelerate the commercialisation of affordable healthcare technologies developed by Indian research institutions.

The platform was unveiled during a national technology transfer event organised by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), where multiple diagnostic tools, medical devices, digital healthcare solutions, and biomedical technologies were handed over to industry partners for large-scale production and deployment. Officials described the initiative as a significant step toward strengthening India’s self-reliance in healthcare innovation and medical technology development.

The transferred technologies cover a broad range of healthcare areas including infectious diseases, cancer diagnostics, maternal and child healthcare, AI-based medical systems, wearable health technologies, and low-cost medical devices. Several innovations are designed specifically to improve healthcare accessibility and affordability in rural and underserved regions.

According to ICMR officials, the biomedical innovation platform will function as an integrated ecosystem connecting researchers, startups, healthcare institutions, manufacturers, and industry stakeholders. The initiative seeks to bridge the gap between laboratory research and commercial healthcare applications by supporting faster technology transfer, product development, and regulatory coordination.

The programme also aligns with India’s broader goals of strengthening domestic healthcare manufacturing and reducing dependence on imported medical technologies. Policymakers increasingly view biomedical innovation as a strategic sector with strong potential for economic growth, public health improvement, and global healthcare competitiveness.

Industry experts believe the initiative could significantly boost India’s medtech and biotech ecosystem by encouraging collaboration between public research institutions and private-sector companies. Startups and healthcare manufacturers are expected to benefit from access to validated technologies and research-backed innovations ready for commercial scaling.

The government has been actively expanding support for healthcare innovation through biotechnology missions, startup incubation programmes, digital health initiatives, and medical research funding. The launch of the new platform reflects increasing emphasis on innovation-driven healthcare infrastructure and indigenous research capabilities following lessons learned during the COVID-19 pandemic.
