Synopsis: Piyush Goyal visits Canada to accelerate free trade agreement negotiations as India and Canada push to strengthen economic cooperation, expand bilateral trade, and rebuild strategic commercial ties.

Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal is set to visit Canada for a three-day trip aimed at accelerating negotiations for the proposed Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement between the two countries. The visit marks the first minister-level engagement since India and Canada signed the terms of reference for the trade pact earlier this year.

The discussions are expected to focus on fast-tracking negotiations and resolving key trade issues as both nations target completion of the agreement by the end of 2026. India and Canada recently concluded the second round of negotiations in New Delhi, covering areas such as goods and services trade, intellectual property, rules of origin, sanitary standards, and technical trade barriers.

The proposed trade deal is seen as an important step toward rebuilding economic ties after negotiations were paused in 2023 following diplomatic tensions between the two countries. Recent engagements suggest both governments are now prioritising economic cooperation and trade expansion despite earlier geopolitical disputes.

India and Canada currently share bilateral trade worth nearly $8 billion, with ambitions to significantly expand economic engagement over the coming years. India’s exports to Canada include pharmaceuticals, textiles, electronics, chemicals, seafood, and engineering products, while services trade is also expected to grow under the proposed agreement.

The visit will include participation from Indian business leaders and trade negotiators, reflecting growing industry interest in stronger Canada-India commercial partnerships. Officials believe the agreement could create new opportunities in sectors such as technology, clean energy, critical minerals, education, digital services, and supply chain diversification.

Canada is also viewed as an important destination for Indian students and skilled professionals, making mobility and talent cooperation another likely area of discussion during the visit. Analysts say stronger trade ties could help both countries diversify economic partnerships amid shifting global trade and geopolitical conditions.

The renewed momentum in trade talks comes as India simultaneously pursues multiple international trade agreements with countries and regional blocs including the United Kingdom, European Union, Oman, Chile, and Peru.
