PhonePe has launched Tatkal NPS, enabling eligible users to open a National Pension System account digitally with a minimum initial contribution of ₹250, using existing bank KYC.

PhonePe has launched Tatkal NPS, a digital facility that allows eligible users to open a National Pension System (NPS) account through its platform with an initial contribution of ₹250. The service aims to simplify access to retirement savings by enabling users to complete account opening through a paperless process without uploading fresh documents or undergoing a separate Know Your Customer (KYC) verification, provided their existing bank KYC is complete.

The service is designed to reduce the administrative steps involved in opening a pension account. Eligible users can enter their date of birth, select a supported bank account linked to their registered mobile number, authenticate the request and make the initial contribution through the Unified Payments Interface (UPI). Once the contribution is successful, the system generates a Permanent Retirement Account Number (PRAN), allowing subscribers to begin building their retirement savings.

The Tatkal NPS facility operates under the framework established by the Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA). It is available to resident Indian individuals aged 18 to 85 who have an active savings bank account with completed KYC and a mobile number registered with the bank. Non-resident Indians, Overseas Citizens of India and minors are not eligible to open accounts through this facility.

The minimum initial contribution is ₹250, while subsequent contributions can start at ₹10. A one-time onboarding charge of ₹100 is also applicable under the current framework. The account uses a predefined investment arrangement, which subscribers may change after onboarding, subject to the applicable rules. Users must also complete any outstanding profile details within one year to avoid restrictions on withdrawals and account exit.

PhonePe’s launch expands its financial services beyond digital payments and provides another route for customers to access a government-regulated retirement savings scheme. The Tatkal NPS initiative is also available through the BHIM Payments App, extending digital account-opening access through UPI platforms.

The rollout comes as India seeks to broaden pension coverage and encourage more individuals to plan for retirement. By reducing paperwork and allowing account opening through familiar digital payment applications, Tatkal NPS could lower the initial barriers to participation. However, NPS contributions are invested in market-linked instruments, and returns are not guaranteed. Prospective subscribers should understand the scheme’s investment choices, charges, tax provisions and withdrawal rules before investing.
