India, Liechtenstein Explore New Opportunities to Deepen Bilateral Tie
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Liechtenstein’s Hereditary Prince Alois held talks to expand cooperation in trade, investment, advanced technology and innovation, building on the India-EFTA trade agreement.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Liechtenstein’s Hereditary Prince Alois held bilateral talks in New Delhi on today, to strengthen cooperation in trade, investment, science, technology and innovation. The meeting formed part of Prince Alois’s four-day state visit to India from October 25 to 28, aimed at expanding economic and diplomatic engagement between the two countries.
The discussions focused on identifying new areas of collaboration, strengthening business partnerships and expanding people-to-people exchanges. Both sides also exchanged views on regional and global developments. Prince Alois, who is serving as Liechtenstein’s acting head of state, was accompanied by Hereditary Princess Sophie and a business delegation comprising senior industry representatives.

The visit comes as India and Liechtenstein seek to build on the India-European Free Trade Association (EFTA) Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement (TEPA), which came into force in October 2025. The agreement is expected to facilitate trade, encourage investment and provide businesses with greater opportunities to access markets across the participating economies.
A key area of bilateral engagement is investment in high-value manufacturing, advanced technologies and innovation-driven industries. During their earlier meeting at the India AI Impact Summit in February 2026, Modi and Prince Alois had expressed confidence that the EFTA trade agreement would support stronger economic ties. The agreement includes an investment commitment of US$100 billion by EFTA states in India over 15 years, alongside provisions intended to promote trade and economic cooperation.
The current visit also includes meetings with President Droupadi Murmu and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar. President Murmu is hosting an official banquet in honour of the visiting prince, while the business delegation is expected to explore opportunities for cooperation with Indian companies. These engagements are intended to complement government-level discussions with commercial partnerships.
India and Liechtenstein established diplomatic relations in 1993. Although Liechtenstein is a small European economy, its participation in EFTA provides a framework for expanding commercial links with India. The operationalisation of TEPA has created a platform for both countries to pursue new opportunities in manufacturing, technology, investment and skills development.

The summit reflects India’s broader effort to deepen economic engagement with European partners and attract investment into emerging and advanced industries. The next phase of bilateral cooperation will depend on translating the discussions into concrete business projects, investment flows and technology partnerships.
