India and Jordan discuss measures to strengthen bilateral economic cooperation, with food security, fertilisers, trade and investment emerging as key areas of engagement. The discussions take place between Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and Jordan’s Minister of Planning and International Cooperation Zeina Zeid Toukan on the sidelines of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) 2026 Annual Meeting in Doha.

Sitharaman highlights India’s position as Jordan’s fourth-largest trading partner and reiterates the target of increasing bilateral trade to $5 billion by 2030. The two ministers review opportunities to expand commercial engagement and strengthen cooperation across sectors of mutual interest.

Food security and fertilisers are among the main areas discussed during the meeting. Both countries have an interest in strengthening cooperation in these sectors as they seek to support trade and address supply-related requirements.

The talks also cover investment opportunities and broader economic cooperation. Toukan says Jordan regards India as a critical market and expresses interest in strengthening engagement with Indian businesses and investors. She also highlights opportunities for cooperation in fertilisers, energy, water and infrastructure projects.

The meeting comes as India and Jordan look to broaden their economic relationship beyond existing trade. According to recent discussions between the two countries, cooperation is also developing in areas such as renewable energy, water resources management and digital infrastructure.

Bilateral trade between India and Jordan stood at around $2.3 billion in 2024, with both sides seeking to diversify the trade basket and expand economic engagement. The countries have also pursued agreements covering water resources management and development, technical cooperation in new and renewable energy, and sharing of digital transformation solutions.

The latest discussions take place during Sitharaman’s participation in the AIIB Annual Meeting in Doha. As India’s Governor to the AIIB, she is scheduled to participate in the annual meeting and the AIIB Investors Dialogue 2026, besides holding bilateral engagements with counterparts from several countries.

For Jordan, greater cooperation with India presents opportunities to attract investment and strengthen partnerships across infrastructure, energy, water and other sectors. For India, the proposed expansion of trade and investment ties adds to its economic engagement with Jordan and the wider West Asian region.

The discussions between Sitharaman and Toukan provide a platform for both countries to identify additional areas of cooperation while working towards the $5 billion bilateral trade objective by 2030.
