India-EU FTA to Boost Ties, India-Sweden Trade Eyes 2030 Growth

Swedish Ambassador Petra Menander says the India-EU FTA opens fresh opportunities for economic cooperation, while India and Sweden aim to double bilateral economic exchange by 2030 through trade, innovation and investment.

Swedish Ambassador to India Petra Menander says the India-European Union Free Trade Agreement (FTA) opens a new chapter in economic relations and creates additional opportunities for India-Sweden commercial cooperation. Speaking to ANI in New Delhi, Menander identifies strengthening economic ties as a key priority during her tenure and says both countries aim to double their economic exchange by 2030.

Menander says there is strong positive momentum in India-Sweden relations and emphasises the need to build on the existing agenda. She says the objective is to double the economic exchange between the two countries by 2030, while also expanding cooperation beyond trade. The envoy identifies political dialogue, people-to-people exchanges, research and innovation as important areas for deeper engagement.

The Swedish envoy's comments come as India and the European Union advances their trade partnership. The FTA provides Indian exporters with wider access to the European market and is expected to create opportunities across sectors by reducing or eliminating tariffs and addressing certain non-tariff barriers. Labour-intensive sectors, including textiles, leather, marine products, gems and jewellery, are among those expected to benefit from improved market access.

For Sweden, the agreement provides an additional framework for expanding commercial engagement with India. The two countries have already established a Strategic Partnership and are seeking to strengthen cooperation across trade, investment, technology, innovation and climate action. The partnership is also supported by growing engagement between Swedish companies and the Indian market.

Menander also highlights the importance of research and innovation in the bilateral relationship. She says the existing partnership in these areas provides a strong foundation for future collaboration and can support wider cooperation between institutions, businesses and researchers in both countries.

Beyond economic engagement, the ambassador says her priorities include strengthening political dialogue and people-to-people connections. The focus reflects the broader expansion of India-Sweden relations following the elevation of their bilateral relationship to a Strategic Partnership in May 2026.

Climate and industrial cooperation also remain significant components of the relationship. India and Sweden are developing a new work programme for the Leadership Group for Industry Transition (LeadIT) for 2027–2030, aimed at supporting industrial decarbonisation.

With the India-EU FTA creating wider opportunities for trade and investment and the India-Sweden Strategic Partnership providing a broader framework for cooperation, both countries are focusing on expanding economic engagement while strengthening collaboration in innovation, research, climate action and people-to-people exchanges.
