India and Sweden have agreed to elevate their bilateral relationship to a strategic partnership following high-level talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson. The discussions focused on expanding cooperation in technology, defence, innovation, clean energy, artificial intelligence, and sustainable industrial development.

The leaders met during Modi’s ongoing multi-nation diplomatic tour across Europe and the Gulf region aimed at strengthening strategic partnerships and boosting economic collaboration. Both sides emphasised the importance of resilient supply chains, trusted technology partnerships, and enhanced cooperation in advanced manufacturing and green transition initiatives.

During the talks, India and Sweden discussed opportunities for collaboration in sectors including semiconductors, electric mobility, renewable energy, digital infrastructure, aerospace, and defence manufacturing. Sweden is home to several major global technology and industrial companies with strong interests in India’s expanding manufacturing and innovation ecosystem.

The leaders also explored deeper cooperation under the India-European Union Trade and Technology Council framework, focusing on clean technologies, cybersecurity, AI governance, and sustainable industrial policies. Analysts noted that India is increasingly strengthening ties with Nordic countries to accelerate technology partnerships and green industrial investments.

Sweden expressed interest in expanding investments across India’s renewable energy, urban infrastructure, telecommunications, and smart manufacturing sectors. Several Swedish firms already operate major manufacturing and research facilities in India across automotive, telecom, engineering, and clean technology industries.

The discussions additionally covered global geopolitical developments, maritime security, and the importance of rules-based international trade. Both countries reiterated support for sustainable economic growth, climate action, and innovation-led development.

Industry experts believe the enhanced strategic partnership could accelerate bilateral investments, joint research initiatives, startup collaboration, and technology transfer opportunities between Indian and Swedish companies. The partnership is also expected to strengthen cooperation in emerging areas such as AI, battery technologies, and smart mobility solutions.
