Piyush Goyal Urges BRICS to Link Payment Systems, Boost Trade
Piyush Goyal urges BRICS nations to link payment systems and promote local-currency trade, seeking faster transactions, lower costs and stronger economic integration among member countries.
Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal of India asks BRICS countries to enhance financial cooperation through the integration of payment systems and increased use of their national currencies in foreign trade. The move aims to improve efficiency in international payments without depending on traditional payment methods.
While addressing the BRICS Business Forum, Goyal stresses the importance of increasing economic interdependence amongst the member economies. He points out the opportunities that can be created through integrated payment systems for smoother transactions and expansion of trade by the business community.

The minister is also a supporter of increasing the use of national currencies in bilateral and multilateral transactions. This would ensure that firms minimize their risk exposure and transaction costs related to conversion through major world currencies.
The Indian proposition has come at a time when BRICS nations are looking to increase their economic cooperation and financial connectivity. The linking of the payment systems infrastructure would provide businesses a more efficient way of conducting cross-border settlements. It would also allow for more SMEs to engage in international business.
Digital payment systems are projected to play a critical role in achieving this objective. Development of interoperable payment systems and digital financial systems will make it possible for BRICS nations to establish effective channels of trade and investments.
Goyal’s suggestion is in line with India’s larger effort to promote diversification within the global financial and trading system by promoting currency transactions in local currencies, which could help BRICS countries discover alternatives that offer flexibility to companies.
The minister emphasizes that increased intra-BRICS trade will require member countries to overcome obstacles that have hindered commercial transactions. Increased cooperation on financial infrastructure, trade facilitation, and market access may help in achieving this objective.

With expansion of BRICS in its economic and geopolitical reach, this idea becomes even more relevant. More interconnected payment infrastructure could be used not only to improve business relations between BRICS members but also as a basis for collaboration in various other spheres.
In general, the proposal from India is to give prominence to financial connectivity and settlement in local currency in making the BRICS economic collaboration stronger. This will enable faster transactions and also stimulate trading within the bloc to make the economic relationship more comprehensive and integrated.
