India, Spain Push UPI-Bizum Link for Digital Payments

Synopsis: India and Spain are advancing plans to link UPI with Bizum to enable seamless cross-border digital payments, reducing transaction costs, improving payment efficiency, and strengthening bilateral trade, tourism, and financial cooperation.

India and Spain are making some important moves towards building up their financial digital relationship through moving forward on talks about connecting the country's UPI system with the Bizum instant payment system in Spain. This move is meant to allow for faster, seamless, and safe international digital transactions that will make it easier for tourists, businessmen, students, and the Indian diaspora.

This proposal is talked about on the occasion of the visit of India’s Minister of State for Commerce and Industry, Piyush Goyal to Spain, wherein meetings are held with high-level representatives of the government and industry players in order to explore new avenues for increasing trade, investment and collaboration through digital means.

The upcoming linkage of UPI with Bizum is expected to facilitate international payments through the creation of an instant payment facility for individuals from both India and Spain using their respective payment systems. The implementation of such a system will result in reduced use of the conventional methods of international payments and also reduce costs and increase the efficiency of making transactions.

The representatives of both countries have identified the digital public infrastructure as an important factor in fostering economic growth and financial inclusion. India's UPI has evolved into one of the world's leading real-time payment platforms by processing several billions of payments monthly, whereas Spain's Bizum has turned into an extensively used mobile payment network. The connection between the two networks will lead to the formation of a strong digital payment corridor.

Discussions are not limited to digital payments but go further to economic cooperation between India and Spain. Both nations are looking at ways through which they can expand their partnership in various areas, such as trade, manufacturing, renewable energy, innovation, logistics, and technology. Building digital connectivity in finance is seen as a critical part of developing bilateral trade.
