  • Reinforces India’s role in global and regional diplomacy

India is set to host foreign ministers-level meetings of key multilateral groupings, including BRICS and the Quad, in May 2026, underscoring its expanding diplomatic role amid a complex global geopolitical environment.

The meetings will take place as part of India’s ongoing BRICS chairmanship for 2026, during which it is responsible for steering the bloc’s agenda and hosting a series of high-level engagements leading up to the BRICS Summit later in the year. The foreign ministers’ meeting will be one of the first major diplomatic gatherings under this presidency, bringing together senior leaders from member countries to deliberate on pressing global issues.

BRICS talks will likely revolve around fostering economic ties, reforming global governance structures, addressing climate change, and sharing technological innovations. With this group being larger than before, a major challenge that the leaders might face is how to handle the divergent views within the group, especially one's that are related to West Asia conflict. Besides that, India will be the venue for the Quad foreign ministers' meeting, which is being held with participation from the United States, Japan, and Australia.

This diplomatic engagement is likely to zero in on security issues in the Indo-Pacific region, cooperation at sea, critical technologies, and strengthening of supply chains. The meeting of the Quad will serve as a platform for like-minded countries to further align their strategic and economic agendas in the region.

These meetings are very well timed, considering that global tensions - most notably in West Asia - are continuing to have effects on energy markets, trade routes, and supply chains. By hosting both BRICS and Quad activities, India is positioning herself at the crossroads of various geopolitical configurations, thus allowing it to act as a mediator among different global interests.

From a strategic perspective, the development highlights India’s growing influence in multilateral diplomacy. By convening major global forums within a short timeframe, India is reinforcing its position as a key stakeholder in shaping international discourse across both the Global South (through BRICS) and Indo-Pacific partnerships (through the Quad).
