Cabinet approves HCL & Foxconn Semiconductor Manufacturing Project
In a significant step towards creating a self-reliant chip ecosystem, the Union Cabinet approved a semiconductor manufacturing project by HCL and Foxconn under the India Semiconductor Mission. The HCL-Foxconn partnership intends to develop a facility in the YEIDA area, adjacent to the new Jewar airport.
Significantly, five semiconductor units are already in advanced construction stages, and with this sixth unit, Bharat moves forward in its journey to develop the strategically vital semiconductor industry.
This facility will manufacture display driver chips used in mobile phones, laptops, automobiles, PCs, and millions of other devices with displays, producing 20,000 wafers per month and generating 36 million display driver chips.
In a statement after the Cabinet meeting headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the government disclosed that the project consisted of an investment of Rs 3,700 crore. As the nation progresses in its semiconductor journey, ecosystem partners have similarly set up their operations in India.
Applied Materials and Lam Research are among the top equipment manufacturers, and both currently operate in India.
Merck, Linde, Air Liquide, Inox, along with numerous other gas and chemical providers, are preparing for the expansion of our semiconductor sector.
The Ministry of Electronics & IT stated that as the demand for semiconductors rises due to the swift expansion of laptop, mobile phone, server, medical device, power electronics, defense equipment, and consumer electronics manufacturing in Bharat, this new unit will contribute to the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat.
