Cabinet Clears Rs 9,072 Crore Rail Multitracking Projects

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs has approved three major railway multitracking projects worth Rs 9,072 crore to strengthen rail infrastructure across Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, and Jharkhand.

The approved works include the doubling of the Gondia–Jabalpur section and the addition of third and fourth lines between Punarakh–Kiul and Gamharia–Chandil. The projects will extend national rail service by 307 kilometers and they will finish operations between 2030 and 2031.

The initiatives developed through the PM-Gati Shakti National Master Plan will create safer and faster freight movement systems, which will benefit passenger services.

The expanded capacity will enable rail access to 5407 villages, which will help 98 lakh people and create efficient transport systems for both passengers and freight.

The routes serve a vital purpose because they enable the movement of bulk materials, including coal, steel, cement, fertilizers and foodgrains. The projects will gain capacity, which enables them to handle 52 million extra tonnes of freight each year while they help to solve logistical problems and reduce transport expenses that affect major sectors.

Officials also highlighted environmental gains through the report, which showed that increased rail cargo would result in 6 crore litres of oil savings and a 30 crore kilogram reduction in carbon emissions, which equals the environmental benefit of planting one crore trees.

The upgraded lines will enhance access to regional hubs and tourist destinations, which will support infrastructure development that drives economic growth while achieving sustainability targets.
