Chhattisgarh Launches 24x7 Grain ATMs in Three Cities

Chhattisgarh launches 24x7 Smart PDS grain ATMs in Raipur, Durg and Bilaspur, enabling eligible beneficiaries to collect rice using biometric authentication while supporting greater convenience and portability under the One Nation One Ration Card system.

The Chhattisgarh government introduces 24x7 Smart Public Distribution System (PDS) grain ATMs in Raipur, Durg and Bilaspur, enabling eligible ration card holders to collect their monthly rice quota at any time. The technology-driven initiative aims to make food-grain distribution more accessible, convenient and transparent for beneficiaries.

The Smart PDS system uses biometric authentication to verify beneficiaries before dispensing their entitled food grains. By moving beyond conventional ration-shop operating hours, the initiative allows beneficiaries to access their monthly quota seven days a week, offering greater flexibility to families who may find it difficult to visit fair-price shops during fixed timings.

The launch forms part of Chhattisgarh's broader efforts to modernise its public distribution network through technology. The grain ATMs are designed to simplify the process of accessing government food entitlements while reducing inconvenience associated with traditional distribution systems. The state government positions the initiative as a step towards ensuring that eligible beneficiaries receive their rightful food grains without unnecessary delays.

Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai emphasises the importance of food security and says the government remains committed to ensuring that food grains reach families entitled to them. The Smart PDS initiative combines this objective with technology-enabled service delivery, allowing beneficiaries greater control over when they collect their ration.

The system also operates within the framework of the One Nation One Ration Card (ONORC) programme. Eligible beneficiaries from other states can access their entitled benefits through the system, subject to applicable provisions. This feature is particularly relevant for migrant workers and other beneficiaries who may move between states for employment or other reasons.

Biometric verification is an important component of the Smart PDS mechanism. It helps authenticate beneficiaries before food grains are dispensed and supports a more technology-driven distribution process. The introduction of automated access points is intended to improve convenience while strengthening the delivery of welfare benefits.

The availability of grain ATMs around the clock also addresses a practical limitation of traditional ration distribution, where beneficiaries generally need to collect food grains within specified operating hours. The new model provides greater flexibility for workers, elderly beneficiaries and families whose schedules may not align with conventional ration-shop timings.
