Coal India Limited (CIL) entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Government of Madhya Pradesh to explore and develop critical minerals and improve resource security in India. The MoU was executed by the state’s Mineral Resources Department, Directorate of Geology and Mining, Madhya Pradesh State Mining Corporation Limited during “Madhya Pradesh Mining Conclave 2.0” event held in Katni.

The MoU was signed in the presence of Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav along with high-level CIL representatives and state officials seeing the significance of this initiative. This partnership marks a pivotal step in diversifying CIL's operations beyond coal into critical minerals to accelerate India's self-reliance and reduce dependence on imports, particularly for renewable energy and electric mobility and advanced manufacturing industries.

By leveraging the geological deposits in Madhya Pradesh, CIL seeks to assist India’s growth in self-sufficiency and, in particular, to help reduce reliance on imports. The partnership will also impact national objectives of developing resources sustainably while helping to meet the increasing demand for minerals essential to clean energy technology. response to clean energy technology.

CIL, located in Kolkata, has been the world’s largest producer of coal since 1975. CIL produces more than 80% of India’s coal through its subsidiaries. The MoU indicates a strategic pivot toward more non-coal minerals, as well as renewable energy, to align with India's energy and resource security objectives. This newly signed initiative measures significant mineral prospects in Madhya Pradesh that will lead to economic growth opportunities, along with access to more technology and advancements.
